Design Observer
Intern for Jessica Helfand
Over the summer of 2019, I had the opportunity to intern for Jessica Helfand, who co-hosts The Design of Business | The Business of Design podcast along with Ellen McGirt (formerly with Michael Bierut). Over the last six seasons, DB|BD has established itself as a forum for design and innovation in all aspects of business, interviewing everyone from Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner to pop star Janelle Monae.
With a change of co-hosts and the start of an entirely new season, this was an opportunity to re-brand the podcast website and make the site more intuitive.

Challenge
How can we re-brand The Design of Business | The Business of Design in preparation for the newest season, while remaining true to its original identity?
Original v. Redesign
Design Goals
Increase user retention on the site
Branding Redesign – communicate a change of co-hosts in preparation for the newest season
Navigation System
The main cause of low user conversion was the lack of a navigation system: all episodes populated on a single page, which made it difficult to find a specific podcast. We designed season landing pages so we could brand each season with its own color.
Branding
The new interface and branding needed to complement the sophistication and prestige of the DB|BD podcast (& parent Design Observer site) and communicate the launch of DB | BD’s 7th season. We decided on monochromatic portraits incorporating season colors from the original branding.
We added a carousel display on the homepage to highlight popular episodes and podcast moments.
