Flow is a term coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi referring to a mental state of consciousness where one is so deeply absorbed in their work, they lose a sense of time and feel as though they are able to work in an almost effortless way.
Learning about this concept was a big aha moment for me because I had been unknowingly practicing it for a long time. I was a serial crafter growing up, making everything from miniature figurines of croissants to beaded gecko keychains to massive origami intersecting tetrahedra. I was obsessed with the process of making things and how it allowed me to enter new mental worlds where everything else around me seemed to disappear. I was probably constantly entering into flow states without even realizing it.
Watching the Big Think’s video on Flow, I thought it’d be fun to practice my motion design skills by creating visuals to pair with the audio.
Storyboarding
I roughly sketched out some ideas for the different sections of the audio clip.
Styleframes
I turned the storyboards into styleframes that I used to create the final piece.
